The Life and Words of Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou has a reputation as being one of the finest African American poets, writers and one of the most influential people in the 20th Century. Her work has been regarded as groundbreaking in making a clear vision of African American life.

Maya Angelou was born as Marguerite Annie Johnson on April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri as the daughter of Bailey Johnson and Vivian Johnson. Her name came as a nickname for her brother called her “my – a sister”. Her early years were filled with strife and were the basis of her autobiography and first book “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.” This book covered with all of the turmoil surrounding Angelou’s life and in her surroundings during her first 17 years. Angelou wrote several other books, which were critical successes.

In addition to her writing, Angelou also was a cook, actress, dancer, educator, journalist, television producer and film director. She has been nominated for the National Book Award, Pulitzer Prize, a Tony Award and three Grammy Awards. She has also been awarded the Presidential Medal of Arts and the Lincoln Medal.

Maya Angelou is one of the most respected writers of the 20th Century. Her work has been read by millions of people, and she has gained the respect of millions of other people. She will leave a legacy behind as one of the most respected and influential African Americans of all time.
